First and foremost, the name “Hakuoh” was taken from Hakuoh University in Japan. Hakuoh means 'white seagull', and the school motto plus ultra, or 'more beyond', is supposed to inspire students to soar to their highest potential. The same can be applied to karaoke.

All singers have an inspiration, and ours was Nishikido Ryo of NEWS and KANJANI8. Not only are his handsome face, tall stature, and manly, chiseled physique works of wonder, his voice is surely one you have never heard of before elsewhere. If you need references, please check the chorus after the musical interlude at the end of “TORN” (preferably where he sings the first two lines by himself) because that’s where you hear the true passion and fire in his voice. Another excellent example is the repetition of a word in “Code,” where we soon felt that desire to sing with the same amount of intensity.

We analyzed several more lines sung by him, and realized the excellent nasal quality could only be produced inside a sizable nose. Since both of us lack that, we had to make do with imitation and extremely difficult test trials of the lines before actually recording.

Needless to say, our passion to karaoke was born. Our style is very much like that of Ryo’s, and expanding from that, we enjoy attempting to imitate the vocal qualities of others in JE. This LJ is made solely for the purpose of our karaoke needs and isn’t the journal of any one person. Please respect that we are trying our best, as many of you are. Every song that we decide to sing to is relatable to the younger singer of the pair.
